Murders and other major felony incidents are generally investigated by the local law enforcement agency having
jurisdiction over the location where the crime occurred (Unincorporated areas of Tehama County fall under the
jurisdiction of the Tehama County Sheriff's Department; Incorporated areas of Red Bluff fall under the jurisdiction
of the Red Bluff Police Department, Incorporated areas of Corning fall under the jurisdiction of the Corning Police
Department and State property and freeways fall under the jurisdiction of the California Highway Patrol). These
agencies will generally conduct the initial investigation that will lead to the case being submitted to the District
Attorney for prosecution. At times there will be additional investigation required in preparation for trial. This
additional investigation may include interviewing additional victims, witnesses and suspects; collecting additional
evidence, obtaining and serving search warrants; and working closely with the prosecuting attorney to ensure a
conviction is obtained.
One Investigator is assigned to the Tehama County Gang Task Force. In addition to work on the Task Force,
the Investigator is responsible for follow up on gang cases submitted for prosecution, maintaining all gang
documentation for all agencies in Tehama County and conducting training for law enforcement and the public.
See the Tehama County Gang Task Force web site for information on gangs in Tehama County.
Investigators conduct welfare fraud investigations as part of a contract with the Tehama County Department of
Social Services (TCDSS). Reports of potential welfare fraud come to the Bureau from TCDSS and from the
public. If anyone suspects welfare fraud they can call the Bureau at 530-529-3590. You may remain confidential
if you wish. Signs of Welfare Fraud may include a person working and not reporting the income, not having
children who they are receiving aid for, or unreported assets such as cars, boats, etc. Welfare is confidential and
we may not be able to inform you of the outcome of the investigation.
